چکیده
Married with Children: A Collective Labor Supply Model with Detailed Time Use and Intrahousehold Expenditure Information We propose a collective labor supply model with household production that generalizes an original model of Blundell, Chiappori and Meghir (2005). In our model, adults’ individual preferences do not only depend on own leisure and individual private consumption of market goods. They also depend on the consumption of domestic goods, which are produced by combining goods bought at the market with individuals’ time. We apply our model to new and unique data on Dutch couples with children. The data contains detailed information about the spouses’ time use and the intrahousehold allocation of all expenditures. Our application uses a novel estimation strategy that builds upon the familiar two-stage allocation representation of the collective model. We obtain interesting (and plausible) empirical results. Spouses’ preferences depend on the consumption of domestically produced goods (including children’s welfare). Next, Pareto weights depend on variables like the individual wages and the share in the household’s nonlabor income. Finally, and perhaps surprisingly, we do not find evidence that mothers care more for their children than fathers. JEL Classification: D11, D12, D13

Intrahousehold Bargaining Power and Leisure Externalities using the PSID 1968-2011
Using a collective model of labor supply and the methodology of Vermeulen et al. (2006), I estimate intrahousehold bargaining power and leisure externalities from observed labor supply decisions and income in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. This analysis provides several contributions to the collective model literature. First, I consider a large time period (1968-2011) – a scale rarely appr...

Collective Labour Supply, Taxes, and Intrahousehold Allocation: An Empirical Approach1 Most empirical studies of the impact of labour income taxation on the labour supply behaviour of households use a unitary modelling approach. In this paper we empirically analyze income taxation and the choice of working hours by combining the collective approach for household behaviour and the discrete hours...
متن کاملEducation, Married Women’s Participation Rate, Fertility and Economic Growth
We construct a model, via educational expenditure, linking female labor supply to fertility and economic growth. Our paper includes three main themes. First, increases in parental time of teaching at home and educational expenditure lead to an increase in the level of human capital stock. Both home education and school education are inputs of the human capital production function. Second, the r...
متن کاملA collective model for female labour supply with nonparticipation and taxation
In this paper, a collective discrete choice model is presented for female labour supply. Both preferences of females and the intrahousehold decision process are econometrically identifiable. The model incorporates nonparticipation and nonlinear taxation. It is applied to Belgian microdata and is used to evaluate the 2001 Tax Reform Act. We find moderate negative behavioural responses to the ref...
متن کاملTax Credits, Labor Supply, and Child Care
We explore the impact of the child care tax credit in the U.S. income tax system on the labor supply decisions of married women with young children by incorporating the cost of child care into a structural labor supply model. Using data from the 1986 NLSY, we find that government subsidies to child care increase labor supply substantially. Our policy simulations show that an increase in the val...
